That’s the reality of off-grid RVing in the winter. While the brochures and spec sheets give you ideal numbers, nothing compares to testing in real-world conditions. We set out to measure how RV batteries and furnaces actually perform in below-freezing temperatures. The results will help you better prepare for winter boondocking trips, so you don’t end up waking to a dead battery in the middle of the night.

The Cold-Weather Test: Batteries and Heat in Action

We parked off-grid and monitored battery usage with a standard 12V furnace at three different overnight lows:

  • 10°F – The furnace cycled every 12–15 minutes. A single 100Ah lead-acid battery dropped to 50% capacity in less than 6 hours. Lithium fared better, lasting about 9 hours before hitting the same level.
  • 20°F – Furnace cycles slowed to every 20–25 minutes. The same 100Ah lithium battery lasted just over 12 hours before requiring recharge. Lead-acid batteries hovered around 8–9 hours.
  • 30°F – A more forgiving night. With blankets and proper insulation, the furnace ran less frequently, giving lithium batteries a solid 16–18 hours of usable power. Lead-acid still struggled, usually falling under 12 hours.

These numbers are averages from real-world testing. Your setup, insulation, and battery type will affect performance, but the pattern is clear: the colder it gets, the faster your power disappears.

Heating Performance: Comfort Comes at a Cost

RV furnaces are reliable, but they’re also some of the biggest draws on your batteries. At 10°F, the blower fan and igniter pulled down reserves quickly. Portable propane heaters (with built-in safety shutoffs) used alongside the furnace reduced the battery load significantly — though they require proper ventilation.

Electric space heaters are great when plugged into shore power, but for true off-grid winter boondocking, your options are mostly furnace plus propane.

Tips for Sizing Your Off-Grid System

Planning to boondock in cold weather? Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Go Bigger on Batteries – Two 100Ah lithium batteries should be considered the starting point for serious winter camping.
  • Solar Helps, But Sunlight Is Limited – In winter, shorter days and cloudy skies mean you can’t rely on solar alone to recharge. A generator or alternator charging system is still essential.
  • Insulation Makes a Huge Difference – Skirting, vent cushions, and window coverings reduce furnace cycles and save precious power.
  • Monitor, Don’t Guess – A battery monitor gives you real-time visibility into how fast you’re draining.

It’s easy to underestimate energy use in the cold. Brochure math might suggest your 100Ah battery should last all night, but reality shows otherwise. That’s why doing the math, or trusting real-world tests like these, is the key to comfortable, safe off-grid adventures.
